    KCB Safari Rally

The eyes of motorsports enthusiasts around the world focus on Nairobi for two days each year when the world's greatest rally drivers roar out of the city to take on the dusty, hot Rift Valley in a trial that has become known as the 'car breaker' of the rally season. Enthusiastic crowds in the streets of the city celebrate the beginning and end of the rally. The Safari Rally used to be part of the World Rally Championship calendar for many years until being excluded after 2002 due to lack of funding. The Kenyan government is trying to get the rally's WRC status restored but since 2003 the race has been part of the African Rally Championship, organized by the FIA. It is currently known as the KCB Safari Rally after its sponsor, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB). The race was also cancelled in 2008 due to the political situation but has since resumed. Despite these trials and tribulations it is a famous and popular race with a long history: it was first held in 1953 when it was called the East African Coronation Safari and was held to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
