Jamaica Travel Guide

It's easy to understand why holidays to Jamaica are so popular. The beauty of this Caribbean island paradise has drawn visitors for centuries. Watch the glorious glow of a Jamaican sunset, be captivated by the unique and engaging ways of its people, relax on the alluring white sandy beaches that stretch for miles and explore the lush green mountains and sparkling waterfalls - all these amazing experiences await visitors on a holiday to Jamaica.

The name Jamaica means 'land of wood and water'. In the past, this enchanting island in the north Caribbean was enjoyed exclusively by the wealthy few privileged to enjoy the unspoilt tropical delights of Jamaica. With an incredible selection of luxury resorts and all-inclusive hotels, Jamaica is now much more accessible to tourists. Natural attractions have been commercialised to cope with the increase in visitors to the island, yet somehow, this commercialisation has not spoiled Jamaica. It still presents a magnificent kaleidoscope of colour and beauty that makes holidaymakers sad to leave, and vow to return.

The Jamaican people are a warm blend of different cultures and nationalities, famous for their hospitality, laid back and friendly nature. The best way to absorb Jamaican culture is to do as the locals do, chill out to some reggae music, bask in the glorious sunshine and enjoy a delicious cocktail. The laid-back vibes make Jamaica the perfect holiday destination if you need to de-stress and forget about day to day life the mundane for a little while.

Holidays To Jamaica – Top Things To Do

Dubbed the ‘Garden of Eden’ for its lush backdrop, Ocho Rios in the bay of ‘eight rivers’ is on the northern coast of Jamaica and features a verdant landscape of swaying sugar cane fields, coconut trees and fruit plantations. The majestic Dunns River flows nearby; climb to the top of the Dunns River Falls with the help of a Park Guide for incredible views of the rainforest. The waterfalls are terraced like giant steps of stairs and are interspersed with several small lagoons, perfect to hang out in if you need a rest on the journey up the Falls.

A visit to Mystic Mountain is a must for adventure seekers. Take a tropical forest adventure tour up to the 700-foot Mystic Mountain peak. Adventure activities include The Bobsled, a thrilling 1000m long ride through dense tropical landscapes and coastal features on custom designed, high-tech sleds, inspired by the famous Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. A zip line adventure is also an exciting option, it whisks travellers between two platforms across the rainforest canopy.

No holiday to Jamaica is complete without watching the spectacular sunset from the West End Cliffs at the famous Rick’s Cafe in Negril. Featured in James Bond’s ‘Thunderball’, Negril in Jamaica is one of the most popular Caribbean resort destinations. Seven Mile Beach is lined with restaurants, bars and cafes. Bloody Bay is a shorter stretch of beach outside of Negril. It is a little quieter than Seven Mile Beach, the water is calm so it is perfect for swimming in the warm Caribbean waters. The coral reefs of Long Bay in Negril are an excellent location for snorkelling.

Montego Bay is Jamaica's biggest playground, famous for its music and nightlife. ‘The Hip Strip’ on Gloucester Avenue is the place to be for night owls and dancing divas. Grab a bite to eat and then dance the night away as you enjoy the free flowing Red Stripe and delicious rum-based cocktails. Some highlights on The Hip Strip include Margaritaville, Pier One and the Bobsled Café, set up in tribute to the Jamaican bobsled team who were the basis for the movie ‘Cool Running’.

Best Time To Visit Jamaica

The best time to visit Jamaica is between November and the end of March. January to March is considered high season, as this is when the weather is driest. Although the average temperatures between April and June are pleasant, the likelihood of rain increases. Temperatures in July and August are often very hot.

The official Caribbean hurricane season runs from 1st of June to the end of November. Few hurricanes hit an island like Jamaica directly. Jamaica is more likely to be affected by an increase in average rainfall. For Jamaica, that usually happens in the months of September and October.
