Discover the best things to do in the Bahamas for an unforgettable trip
We all know the Bahamas is most famous for its golden sands and crystal clear waters. Sun worshippers flock to the islands each year to lap up the rays and let all their worries drift away. While the beaches are truly spectacular, it’s important to realise that the Bahamas offers holiday-makers so much more than just that. Here are our Caribbean expert Orlagh’s top 5 things to do in the Bahamas when you feel like kicking things up a notch.
See swimming pigs
Yes, you read that right! The playful pigs that live on the appropriately named Pig Island take refreshing dips in the beautiful azure sea. Sheltered by neighbouring islands, the waters here have few waves and are perfectly tranquil when the sun beats down. From mainland Exuma there are many boat excursions that take you to these water-loving creatures. Daytrips also often include a sailing to Thunderball Grotto which featured in the James Bond film ‘Thunderball’. Witness the colourful coral and fish that live under the sea with a spot of snorkelling.
Visit Graycliff Mansion
The majestic Graycliff Mansion was originally built by a buccaneering pirate, Captain John Howard Graysmith, in 1740. The history of the manor itself is quite fascinating – it was home to the first Anglican Church in Nassau and was even headquartered by the American Navy at one point. Nowadays tourists are keen to explore the charming rooms, as well as the incredible chocolate and cigar factories on site. Plenty of souvenir buying opportunity here! Be wowed by the impressive wine cellar, the biggest in the Caribbean, and sample some delicacies.
Swim with dolphins
Feel your spirits lift as you swim with dolphins in Paradise Island. There really is no other experience like it! Atlantis’ Dolphin Cay is one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated animal rescue-rehabilitation facilities in the world. Guests have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these friendly mammals. The different interactive programmes available are fantastic and cater to all swimming abilities.
Party in the Junkanoo parade
Dance the night away Bahaman style! Junkanoo festival takes place throughout the islands on New Year’s Day with vibrant street parties going on until the early hours. Plan your trip around this lively festival and enjoy a real slice of local Bahaman life. Judges award prizes for the best costumes and group acts. The dazzling dance troupes and traditional music performances will really knock your socks off.
Explore Lucayan National Park
Located on Grand Bahama Island, the breath-taking Lucayan National Park is the only place where you can witness all of the Bahamas’ six ecosystems at once. The park also boasts over six miles of underwater cave systems just waiting to be explored – pretty cool stuff! Take your time to experience all that the park has to offer, primarily the numerous species of unique and colourful flora and fauna. The stunning Gold Rock Beach is the perfect spot to chill out after your wanderings.
It’s safe to say that there is plenty in the Bahamas to keep you occupied no matter what your interests may be. With white sandy beaches, exciting festivals, historical buildings and magnificent scenery, this wonderful country is the perfect holiday destination. The only hard part will be saying goodbye at the end of an amazing trip.
