Heading to the Indian Ocean? Don’t miss Travelmood’s favourite things to see in Sri Lanka
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again – Sri Lanka is the perfect destination whether you fancy relaxation or adventure, culture or romance. This island paradise packs a big punch with a fantastic array of activities and attractions to keep you entertained, no matter what your budget might be. On her recent visit, our Travelmood specialist Denise was lucky enough to travel around the country, taking in the most magnificent sights (research purposes, of course!). Here are her observations about the very best things to see in Sri Lanka.
UNESCO World Heritage sites
Sri Lanka is dotted with ancient cities, ornate palaces and historic monasteries just waiting to be explored. Highlights include the sprawling ruined city of Anuradhapura, which rivals the Egyptian Pyramids in terms of scale and is still used today for religious ceremonies. Make sure to also check out the mighty remains of Polonnaruwa, climb the magnificent Sigiriya Rock and venture into the magical cave temples of Dambulla on your trip.
White, sandy beaches
Sure, Sri Lanka boasts enough cultural sights to keep you busy for the duration of your getaway but it’s important to spend some time unwinding on the island’s beautiful beaches too. Negombo is a picturesque coastal town with lots of renowned restaurants and buzzing bars – perfect for beach bums who fancy letting their hair down afterhours. I recently stayed in the stunning Jetwing Beach Resort which really has that wow factor. With three restaurants, a gorgeous pool area and luxurious spa, your worries will soon melt into nothingness.
If there’s one other nation in the world that comprehends our Irish love of tea then it’s Sri Lanka. I have to say that home-grown Sri Lankan blends might even trump our beloved Lyons and Barry’s brews. Kandy’s Ceylon Tea Museum is a must-visit attraction, with exhibits on tea pioneers such as Thomas Lipton and lots of retro tea paraphernalia. Head into the surrounding tea plantations to find out more about how it is grown and produced. Lots of cups of delicious tea are guaranteed!
The Pinnawalla Elephant Orphanage, created to protect abandoned and orphaned elephants, will capture your heart. Get up close with cuddly elephants in their natural environment. You have the opportunity to bathe these friendly creatures which makes for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Watching hundreds of elephants march happily through the countryside is definitely one of the most memorable things to see in Sri Lanka, you won’t forget that in a hurry!
I’ve travelled around the world and nowhere has stood out for me in terms of fun-filled activities, magnificent attractions and value for money as Sri Lanka. This exotic destination is becoming more and more popular each year. Beat the crowds and be sure to check out these incredible things to see in Sri Lanka on your sunny escape!
