Reasons to visit South Africa

Find out the top reasons to visit South Africa on your next getaway

With majestic mountains, picturesque coastlines, lush winelands and sophisticated cities, South Africa is a breath-taking country sure to enthral and entice visitors. Step off the plane into a welcoming land of cultural diversity where life-changing experiences are pretty much guaranteed. Tracy fell in love with this stunning land on her very first visit and returns whenever she can. Here she outlines her top reasons to visit South Africa this year…

South African safaris

Get up close and personal with the incredible creatures that call South Africa home. There are many different companies offering fantastic safari tours so you’re sure to find one to suit your budget and itinerary. On my last visit I headed for a game reserve in Port Elizabeth where I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of rhinos, lions, elephants, buffalos and leopards, as well as a wide array of smaller but just as interesting species.

Affordable prices

One of the biggest draws to South Africa is that it’s fantastic value for money. From food and drink to accommodation and activities, your euro goes much, much further than it does back home. To keep costs at an all-time low, I’d recommend booking transfers and day trips in advance.

South Africa holidays

Incredible scenery

Nature lovers will be blown away by the diversity of the beautiful South African landscapes. Rolling mountains, meandering rivers, golden beaches and awe-inspiring vistas – there’s plenty to smile about. Journeying along the stunning Garden Route, which runs along the Indian Ocean, is one of my favourite things to do in South Africa. This region boasts intense beauty and abundant opportunity to try adventure sports and activities such as canoeing, hiking and birdwatching.

Cultural diversity

South Africa is a melting pot of culture, best described by Archbishop Desmond Tutu as ‘the Rainbow Nation’. Today, people of African, Asian and European descent live side by side, creating a vibrant and intoxicating national culture. It’s easy to find amazing international food and drinks and nearly everyone speaks English which makes planning excursions and ordering in restaurants completely hassle-free.

Delicious cuisine

If your idea of a decent meal is meat, meat and more meat, then you’ve come to the right place! South Africa is famous for its barbeques, known locally as braai. A braai can be used to celebrate any occasion and always involves lots of intense flavours and spices. Yum! Wash it all down with a glass of magnificent local wine. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Amazing climate

South Africa’s summer runs from October until April, making it the perfect destination if you’re in need of some sun during our winter months. The climate is generally good throughout the year, with some areas experiencing over 300 days of gorgeous sunshine. Bask in those glorious rays on one of the exquisite beaches or venture into the wild with the heat of the sun on your back. It certainly makes for a nice change from our often cripplingly cold weather.

It’s hard to sum up why South Africa demands your respect and attention in just one blog post. Those are just a few things that really struck a chord with me. Jet off to this beautiful destination and you’ll be adding plenty of more reasons to your own list!
