Find out the top five reasons to visit Mexico
Mexico is a destination where time slows down and the days are filled with relaxation and wonder. The country’s ancient roots are visible everywhere and modern Mexico is proud to show off this heritage. Orlagh has been captivated by the country’s unique culture and incredible beaches since her very first visit. Here, she discusses her top five reasons to visit Mexico and gives advice about making the most of your upcoming trip.
1 – Ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins
You can’t go to Mexico without witnessing the magnificence and glory of the ancient Aztec, Mayan and Pueblan ruins. Be wowed by their majestic pyramids, ornate temples and palaces and chilling sacrificial sites. Thankfully the most impressive sites have been restored and are accessible to tourists. Out of all the ruins, I’d definitely recommend a trip to Chichén Itzá, which was built on the Yucatan Peninsula and draws over a million tourists every year. The awe-inspiring ruins stand out in great contrast with the surrounding natural area. If you have time, venture to mysterious Tulum, an abandoned ancient city located above the deep turquoise of the Caribbean sea.
2 – Incredible beaches
No one can deny that Mexico boasts some of the world’s best beaches. Each resort town has its own special flavour and offers something different to be enjoyed. Whether you’re in need of some relaxation or fancy trying your hand at adventure sports, you won’t be disappointed. Head to the stunning Riviera Maya and escape the stresses of everyday life. There are many luxurious hotels to choose from, all set amongst spectacular natural scenery. Chill out with a cocktail and watch the world go by from the comfort of your very own hammock. You won’t want to come home!
3 – Spanish colonial influence
Spain’s influence is apparent in every corner of Mexico, from the people who are a blend of Aztec, Native American and European heritage to the stunning colonial mansions that line the ancient city streets. You have to visit Campeche, one of the country’s most picturesque cities which is surprisingly untouched by tourism. Not for long! The city sits on the Gulf of Mexico and was originally built to fend off marauding pirates and buccaneers. Relax on the waterfront at the end of your day’s explorations and take in the pastel coloured haciendas and nods to old-world colonialism. Read up on Mexico’s unique history before you go to really make the most of your time there.
4 – First class resorts
If you’re after a luxurious getaway, Mexico is definitely the destination for you. There are dozens of fantastic hotels to choose from in all corners of the country. One of my personal favourites is Secrets the Vine, an all-inclusive resort in vibrant Cancun. There are 497 guestrooms, all individually decorated so you really feel like you’re having an authentic and unique experience. Stay at Secrets Maroma in Playa del Carmen for its luxurious facilities and proximity to the beautiful Maroma Beach, Rios Ecopark and El Camaleon Golf Club. Another top resort is the Le Blanc Spa Resort, the perfect base if you fancy indulging in some relaxing spa treatments.
5 – Scuba diving and snorkelling
There is also a wealth of life under the sea with abundant opportunity for world-class snorkelling and scuba diving. Explore the warm Caribbean waters of Cancun or venture into the crystal clear Pacific Ocean at Puerto Vallarta. Make sure you pick up an underwater disposable camera to get those all-important underwater selfies and capture the colourful creatures you are guaranteed to encounter. Those who are serious about diving can get their PADI qualification at one of the many expert diving schools.
Those are just five reasons to explore Mexico – there really are many, many more. Believe me, this is one hell of a country which you are guaranteed to fall in love with.
