Our expert delves into the best beaches in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, boasts many stunning beaches to relax on and explore. The island’s stunning panoramic views and year-round tropical climate attract thousands of visitors every year. No matter what part of this magical island nation you choose to visit, there will be a beach to suit your needs. In this blog our travel expert Sarah shares what she believes are the best beaches in Sri Lanka.
Situated in the Galle District of the Southern Province, Bentoto beach is recognised as one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. The beach stretches north, where it becomes a sandy strip, known as Paradise Island, that is parallel to the marvellous Bentoto Lagoon. I found this beach to be ideal for families as the water is very shallow and calm.
The gorgeous palm trees which line the beach add to its beautiful atmosphere. This is the perfect beach to lounge on, enjoy a swim or walk along the shore.
Mirissa is a small town located in the Matara District of the Southern Province. Mirissa’s beach and nightlife make it a popular tourist destination. The beach is one of the island’s main whale and dolphin watching locations and some lucky visitors even spot the stunning blue whale. We weren’t so lucky, but we did catch a glimpse of some beautiful dolphins!
Mirissa beach is less touristy than other beaches and is also a fishing port, which offers visitors a taste of the local culture. The beach is fantastic place to spend the evening, whether you want to watch the sunset or observe the famous stick-fishermen at work.
Unawatuna is a coastal town in the Galle district of Sri Lanka with its idyllic beach drawing both local and foreign visitors every year. Unawatuna beach offers more than just sea and sand and sunshine. Enjoy the hustle and bustle with many hotels, restaurants, bars and shops close by.
There is plenty to see and do in this pleasant beach town, which boasts numerous museums and churches. We jumped on a bus and after a short ride, arrived in the old town and the Fort of Galle. These are UNESCO World Heritage sites and are definitely worth a visit.
Situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa is a beach famous for its underwater enchantments. Visitors can hire a glass bottomed boat, or a pair of goggles and flippers, to explore the ocean’s hidden delights. A day spent at Hikkaduwa beach is an unforgettable experience, so make sure to put it on your bucket list.
Arugam Bay – Best beaches in Sri Lanka
Located in the east of Sri Lanka, this remote beach is renowned for its surfing and laid back charm. Arugam Bay is one of the best surfing points in the world with magnificent waves for surfers to ride. Local shops provide all the basic surfing equipment so everyone can indulge in this thrilling activity. We hired our gear and tested the waters – even though I am a complete beginner I still had great fun.
Arugam Bay offers the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. Soak up the sunshine or plan a walk to the Elephant Rock while enjoying the tranquillity of this delightful beach.
