Discover the top 5 reasons to go on safari this year
A huge number of tourists flock to Africa each year, keen to catch a glimpse of the diverse plant and animal species that call this fascinating continent home. Orlagh has had the pleasure of getting up close and personal with the ‘Big Five’ on a recent trip to Kenya and Tanzania. Here she outlines her top 5 reasons to go on safari this year
1 – Witness a Wonder of the World
I was lucky enough to recently witness the wildebeest migration across the Mara River, which has come to be known as a wonder of the world. If there is really a safari you should never miss, then this is it! The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya are stages on which this great animal show is set. The migration takes place around the months of July to October and these animals cross in their millions! Their instinctive search for greener pastures is so incredible, it still awes even the most seasoned safari goers – myself included!
2 – Take in the amazing scenery
The beauty of the African continent also lies in its stunning landscapes which are dotted with many unique land formations. In areas unadulterated by human settlement, the rugged land stretches as far as the eye can see, resulting in pretty surreal views. Perhaps the most famous and unique formation is the Great Rift Valley that runs from the North of the continent, right through Kenya and Tanzania and further down south. Take in the gorgeous valleys, majestic mountains and tranquil lakes that make up this beautiful region.
3 – See unique animal and plant life
The first thing you’ll want to tick off your African bucket list is a sighting of the ‘Big Five’ – the native elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. No matter how many times you’ve seen ‘The Lion King’ you’ll still be blown away by these spectacular creatures. The continent is also home to smaller, but just as interesting, species. Take time to appreciate the huge variety of birds, insects and plant life you’re guaranteed to encounter on your adventure.
4 – Enjoy a camping experience
If you enjoy camping, why not do it in the wild, surrounded by nature? Listening to the sounds of the jungle as you drift off to sleep is an experience not to be missed, nor easily forgotten. Many tour operators organise camping stays in Kenya and Tanzania throughout the year and you can rest assured that your safety always comes first. Waking up amidst some of the world’s most magnificent scenery is truly life-changing.
5 – Explore the Great Coast
The breath-taking East African coast stretches from Malindi in Kenya right down to Mtwara in Tanzania. In my experience, the beauty of this area lies in its people – the Swahili and their culture. On safari you get to interact with the locals, taste delicious local Swahili dishes and spend days on end sunning on the beach. Along the coast, there are important historical sites dating back to the 17th century when the Portuguese first arrived in Africa.
For a holiday with a difference, choose an African safari. The region’s beautiful landscapes and creatures are sure to impress. Interact with the locals to truly enrich your experience and build memories to last a lifetime.
