According to legend, the Greek god Vulcan had his workshop at the towering peak of the island’s volcano. Volcanic activity may have ceased, but visitors can take the two-hour walk to the top, for a heavenly view over the glittering sea. Back on the beach, the waterside caves make for some excellent swimming, whilst the volcanic mud in Vulcano’s thermal springs is said to be therapeutic for skin and back problems.

Vulcano is located 25km north of Sicily and the southernmost of the eight Aeolian Islands. Today the Islands volcanic activity has ceased, but visitors can take the two-hour walk to the top for a heavenly view over the Island and the clear blue waters below. On the coast the waterside caves make for some excellent swimming and the dark sands of Vulcano’s beaches are perfect for those lazy afternoons in the sun. Guests on the island can also take advantage of the therapeutic effects of the volcanic mud in the thermal springs, which is told to be soothing for any skin and back problems.
